Also while in North Carolina, a friend of mine took me to Lake Crabtree where we had a nice meander all over the place to the tune of about 4 miles. It was a lovely day and we happened upon a group of people competing in a radio controlled sailboat race. They were very competitive. And a little shouty. The boats were fun to watch, though.
Another picture from my walks in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina during a recent business trip. Between my hotel and the meeting site, I cross a little bridge with a lovely creek. It’s a very pleasant sound and sight.
The irrigation canal has been filled – which always means the return of the duck couples. I spotted several but this was the closest I managed to get for a photo.
I did not know that heron would flock. Normally I only see them individually on the river. Recently I walked by a wetlands preserve that I usually drive past. I don’t generally walk there because I like to have routes that are a loop, and to go to this place I have to walk there and then backtrack.
This has been a mistake. Also, I should take my actual camera, tripod, and zoom lens next time I head that way. Not only were there a ton of heron (I assume it’s a nesting ground) – I also spotted a fox! The heron seemed rather unconcerned about the fox, quite possibly because of the large number of them. Seriously. I’m sorry for the cell-phone photo, but keep looking. You’ll spot a LOT more. (click for larger version)
Yes, this is a weed. I know this because it’s growing up through the lawn at work and will no doubt soon be decapitated by a lawnmower. But it is pretty and it made me smile.
This is a rare time when the post is coming on the actual date I took the photo. One of the things I love about where I work is the attention paid to making sure we have a nice environment that is pleasant to come to. We have a lot of beautiful flowering trees that burst into color in the spring. The combination of the blue sky and the white flowers were too lovely not to share right away.
These guys live less than a mile from me and are usually pretty far from the road. For whatever reason on this day they were interested in coming over for a closer look. To be honest, 2-1 looks a little too interested now that I see the picture…
I often see seagulls on the Columbia River – which is always a little odd because I’m rather far inland (many hours!). One morning there was a huge flock in the middle of campus – a rare sight for me! Like a kid, I had to startle them into flying and then I captured this with my phone camera. I guess the phone camera is why there are shadow birds in the image, but I think it looks cool.
Another morning walk by the Columbia River and another heron sighting. This time he was stretching his wings while fishing from a channel marker. And yes, I know. I really need to go out with a real camera and stop relying on my phone only while I’m out by the Columbia.
During a morning walk by the Columbia River it was so lovely and peaceful I decided to sit on a bench for a bit and just soak it all in. Not too long after, a pheasant strolled by. How I wish I had a better camera at that moment than my phone, but nonetheless I wanted to share it with you. Magical!
