One of my favorite things about walking around work in spring is all the flowering trees. So beautiful!
What a difference…
On this, the first day of spring 2014, I thought I’d share what difference a few days can make – this is the same section of daffodils that I posted earlier this week:
Sprung!
On Saturday I spent time clearing out the last of the daylily detritus from last year. We have a long narrow planting bed with literally thousands of daffodils and daylilies – the daffodils come up first and then the daylilies get large and cover the final vestiges of the daffodils. After that, in the fall/winter, I clean up the daylilies and then it’s all ready to start again. The problem is that I waited rather long to get to it so the daffodils had already started popping up, and I spent quite a bit of time apologizing to the little leaves I accidentally stepped on.
Cleaned up just in time though – because on Sunday we had our first bloom! And no doubt there are new ones that I will see today…

I actually did see this while walking to work this very morning. I have no idea if this is an old nest or a new one or one that gets re-used, but I’m hoping there will be activity here! And I’m very much looking forward to the buds on this tree turning into leaves and flowers soon…

I doubt there will be many in this series, but now that we don’t have to have phones turned off I can snap pictures during take-off and landing. On my recent flight out of Washington DC from Reagan National Airport I had a fantastic view of the Pentagon for a short while.

I was in Washington DC briefly and had an opportunity to walk by the National Mall on my way to my meetings. The scaffolding around the Washington Monument is slowly coming down and it’s starting to look a lot more familiar. See here for a view when it was fully encased.
Waterpecker?
Recently it was cold enough here that our backyard pond froze over. A flicker (woodpecker) landed on the iced over water near the only liquid bit to take a drink, and thankfully stuck around long enough for me to get my camera out.

On the one day it rained we ducked into a little place to get some shelter and have a drink. They had the most beautiful food on display, but we weren’t hungry so I just admired it. And took pictures.

Another bit of randomness from a walk in Barcelona – I saw on the stones that made up the path this bit that looked like bacon. It amused me. And the people around me very likely wondered why the heck I was taking a picture of the sidewalk…

While out for a walk in Barcelona, we ran across these lovely flowers. I don’t know what they are, but they brightened the already pleasant day.
